VICTORIA, B.C. — Premier David Eby is marking Easter 2026 with a message that blends religious reflection and the holiday’s role as a family‑centred spring break in British Columbia.
In a statement released Sunday, Eby recognized Easter Sunday as the most important day on the Christian liturgical calendar, describing it as the culmination of a season of observances that begins with Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, continues through the 40‑day fast of Lent, and reaches its peak on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
“For Christians, Easter marks the day that their Saviour, Jesus Christ, was resurrected, making this an important holiday about the triumph of life over death,” Eby said. “It also reflects key Christian values: the ultimate power of love, and the importance of self‑sacrifice, putting others first, ahead of ourselves.”
At the same time, the premier emphasized how Easter is widely celebrated beyond the church as a civic holiday. He highlighted how friends and families across B.C. gather to share meals, spend time together, and enjoy the long weekend as the province moves into spring.
“In many communities, families celebrate by hiding chocolate eggs and other treats for children to find on Easter morning,” Eby noted, calling the holiday a popular one for kids and intergenerational gatherings alike.
The premier concluded his statement with a simple greeting to those observing the holiday: “To all those who are celebrating, happy Easter.”
British Columbia observes Easter Sunday as a statutory holiday, giving many workers and students a long weekend that coincides with the first major spring break of the year. In recent years, the date has also been used by communities and local governments to promote family events, outdoor activities, and Indigenous and secular spring celebrations alongside the traditional Christian observance.
