Italian authorities have cancelled two highly anticipated concerts featuring American rappers Kanye West, now known as Ye, and Travis Scott that were scheduled to take place in July in the northern city of Reggio Emilia.

The decision was announced on Saturday, with officials citing concerns related to public safety, security, and the possibility of large-scale protests surrounding the events.

Authorities Cite Security Risks

The cancellation order was issued by local prefect Salvatore Angieri, who said the move was necessary to maintain public order.

According to officials, the back-to-back concerts were expected to attract massive crowds within a short period of time, creating logistical and security challenges. Authorities also expressed concern over the possibility of demonstrations and public unrest, particularly surrounding Ye’s appearance.

Travis Scott was scheduled to perform at the Pulse of Gaia Festival on July 17 at the RCF Arena, one of Europe’s largest outdoor venues with a capacity of more than 100,000 people. Ye was due to take the stage at the same venue the following day.

Concerns Raised by Community Groups

Angieri revealed that the decision followed appeals from consumer rights organisation CODACONS as well as members of the Jewish community in Modena and Reggio Emilia.

The groups reportedly raised concerns about hosting Ye, whose public image has remained controversial in recent years due to a series of antisemitic comments and actions.

Authorities noted that the close scheduling of the two concerts, combined with the expected influx of spectators, contributed to the decision to prohibit the events.

Ye Faces Continued Backlash Across Europe

Ye has encountered significant resistance across Europe this year following a string of controversies linked to antisemitic remarks, including statements praising Adolf Hitler and the release of content featuring Nazi imagery.

Several planned appearances across the continent have already been cancelled or postponed.

In April, British authorities denied Ye entry into the country, stating that his presence would not be conducive to the public good. Later that month, he postponed a planned concert in Marseille after reports suggested the French government was seeking to block the event. Concerts in Poland and Switzerland were also called off.

Italian authorities referenced these previous cancellations while explaining their decision, pointing to what they described as the “concrete risk” of protests.

Travis Scott’s Concert Safety Record Under Scrutiny

While much of the concern surrounding the Italian events focused on Ye, Travis Scott has also faced scrutiny over safety issues at his concerts.

The rapper continues to be associated with the tragic crowd crush at the 2021 Astroworld Festival in Houston, where 10 people lost their lives and hundreds more were injured during his performance.

Although Scott has continued touring globally since the incident, questions about crowd management and concert safety have remained part of public discussions surrounding his live events.

Ye Continues International Performances

Despite the growing number of cancellations, Ye has continued to perform in countries willing to host his shows.

The rapper was scheduled to hold a concert in Istanbul later on Saturday and is also expected to perform in the Netherlands next month. Dutch authorities recently stated that there were no legal grounds to prevent him from entering the country.

Ye has previously apologised for some of his controversial remarks, attributing them to struggles related to untreated bipolar disorder.

However, his appearances continue to generate debate and opposition in several countries.

No Immediate Response From Artists

Neither Ye nor Travis Scott had publicly commented on the cancellation at the time of the announcement. Event organisers in Italy also did not immediately issue a statement regarding the decision.

The cancellation marks another setback for Ye’s European concert plans and highlights the ongoing challenges organisers face when balancing freedom of expression, public sentiment, and security concerns surrounding high-profile performers.
