Canadian creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are tapping into childhood nostalgia with their next project: a modern reimagining of the classic Canadian television series The Littlest Hobo.
The project was announced on Thursday as part of Bell Media’s upcoming slate of screen productions. The new version will be a live-action scripted series based on the beloved Canadian show.
Originally airing on CTV from 1979 to 1985, The Littlest Hobo followed a clever and courageous German shepherd with no permanent owner. The dog traveled from town to town, helping people facing various challenges along the way. The series became a Canadian favorite, helped in part by its memorable theme song, Maybe Tomorrow, which was sung and co-written by Canadian musician Terry Bush.
For Rogen and Goldberg, the show holds special significance. The duo described The Littlest Hobo as “a foundational show of our childhood” and said they are excited to introduce it to a new generation of viewers.
“Though the hobo may be little, we promise big things to come,” the two said in a statement. “That doesn’t mean the dog will be huge like Clifford. The hobo will still be little. But the adventures will be BIG.”
Additional details about production, casting, and the series premiere date are expected to be announced later.
The 1980s Canadian version of The Littlest Hobo was itself a remake of an American television series that aired in the 1960s. That earlier show was inspired by a 1958 film of the same name.
The new adaptation is being developed through the partnership between Rogen and Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures and Lionsgate. It follows the success of their recent comedy series The Studio, which won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for its satirical take on the movie industry.
Rogen, an actor and filmmaker, and Goldberg, a writer and producer, both grew up in Vancouver and have collaborated on numerous hit projects over the years. Their credits include Superbad, Pineapple Express, The Boys, and a revival of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The pair have also been vocal about their enthusiasm for creating Canadian content. When their partnership with Bell Media and Lionsgate Canada was first announced in December 2024, Rogen and his Point Grey team said:
“Canada is the greatest country on Earth and deserves the greatest content on Earth”
They also shared their ambition to create “creatively exciting and financially lucrative work that flows forth from our alliance like syrup from a well-tapped maple tree.”
