VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouverites looking to cool off during the recent stretch of warm weather will need to adjust their beach plans. Sunset Beach, one of the city’s most popular coastal destinations, remains under a “not suitable for swimming” advisory due to elevated levels of E. coli bacteria.
The advisory, issued by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), warns the public to avoid swimming or wading in the water until further notice.
What Caused the Advisory?
Vancouver Coastal Health monitors the water quality at popular beaches weekly from May through September. The water is tested for specific bacteria that indicate the presence of fecal matter from humans, pets, or local wildlife.
According to VCH guidelines, a beach is flagged as unsafe if a single sample exceeds 400 E. coli per 100 millilitres of water. Sunset Beach recently crossed this threshold, triggering the immediate health notice.
Why it matters: Swimming in water with high E. coli levels can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses, skin rashes, and eye, ear, or throat infections.
Can You Still Visit the Beach?
Yes. The advisory applies strictly to water activities. Locals and tourists are still welcome to hang out on the sand, sunbathe, play volleyball, and enjoy the seawall.
Other Vancouver Beaches Under Watch
While Sunset Beach is currently the only major spot completely restricted for swimming, VCH has noted higher-than-expected bacteria counts at several other locations.
The following beaches are currently under active investigation, though swimming is still permitted for now:
English Bay
Locarno Beach
Third Beach
Trout Lake
Beachgoers are highly encouraged to check the VCH Interactive Beach Status Map before heading out to ensure their preferred spot is safe for a dip.
