Canada’s Historic FIFA World Cup Win Draws 41,000 Fans to Vancouver Fan Festival

The PNE fairgrounds at Hastings Park witnessed a historic surge of Canadian soccer pride on Thursday, June 18, 2026. A record-breaking 40,943 fans passed through the gates of the official FIFA Fan Festival Vancouver to witness Canada’s explosive 6-0 win over Qatar in their second World Cup group stage match.

The massive turnout marks the highest single-day attendance for the local festival since the tournament kicked off, turning the venue into a sea of red, white, and pure jubilation.

Unprecedented Crowds at Hastings Park
The festival’s daily attendance has fluctuated based on match pairings, but Canada’s dominant performance pushed numbers to completely new heights. Thursday’s crowd was nearly 9,500 higher than the previous record holder set on Saturday, June 13, when 31,481 fans turned out for a packed slate that included Australia vs. Turkey at BC Place.

By comparison, the festival’s initial opening day drew 16,036 attendees, which climbed to 19,839 on Friday, June 12, for Canada’s tournament opener against Bosnia & Herzegovina. Numbers remained steady through Sunday with just over 20,000 visitors, before hitting a mid-week low on Wednesday, June 17, when 11,480 people attended the matches.

Cumulatively, over its first six operating days, the Vancouver Fan Festival has welcomed a staggering 139,803 attendees, averaging more than 23,000 soccer fans per day.

Inside the Festival Experience
Unlike the annual paid PNE Fair, admission to the official FIFA Fan Festival is completely free. Organizers have maximized the space to accommodate the massive influx of local and international visitors.

The venue boasts 10 giant screens scattered across the fairgrounds, ensuring fans don’t miss a second of the action. The state-of-the-art PNE Amphitheatre acts as the festival’s main hub, holding a capacity of roughly 10,000 people. This includes a free, first-come, first-served general admission floor for 2,600 fans, alongside premium ticketed seating. While individual match interest ebbs and flows throughout the day, the overall Hastings Park location is built to comfortably accommodate up to 25,000 people concurrently.

How Vancouver Measures Up Nationally
FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the North American host cities, noting that fan festivals in Canada and the U.S. have been “consistently operating at capacity.”

While Vancouver is putting up incredible numbers, the three Mexican host cities are currently leading tournament attendance by a wide margin. Mexico City’s public plaza venue recorded a massive 527,100 cumulative attendees over the first week, followed by Monterrey at 244,710 and Guadalajara at 218,424.

Direct comparisons remain tricky, however, as each city utilizes vastly different formats. While Vancouver is open on 28 select days of the 39-day tournament, cities like Mexico City are open for the entirety of the World Cup. Meanwhile, other destinations like Seattle have opted out of a central festival entirely, choosing decentralized, unofficial community activations instead.

What’s Next?
With the Canadian Men’s National Team riding high on momentum and local transit ridership hitting a six-year peak, the tournament atmosphere in Vancouver is drawing heavy comparisons to the magic of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The FIFA Fan Festival Vancouver will remain open on select match days throughout the tournament, offering live concerts, 32 distinct food vendors, and prime match viewing as Canada continues its historic World Cup journey.
