BC’s first battery storage project comes to Vancouver Island

BC Hydro is advancing a 100-megawatt battery facility near Duncan to strengthen grid reliability as electricity demand grows across the region. The project, targeted for service by 2030, marks a major milestone in modernizing British Columbia’s electricity system.

British Columbia is making a strategic move to strengthen its electricity infrastructure with the launch of its first utility-scale battery energy storage project on Vancouver Island. BC Hydro announced it will issue a request for supplier qualifications on July 30, 2026, to identify companies capable of designing and delivering the facility near Duncan, with service targeted by 2030.

The battery storage facility will deliver at least 100 megawatts of flexible capacity, allowing electricity to be stored when demand is lower and released to the grid when customers need it most. This technology responds within seconds to changing system conditions, helping support reliability during peak demand periods and maximizing the use of existing infrastructure across Vancouver Island and beyond.

The project represents a key component of BC Hydro’s Powering Growth plan, which aims to meet rising electricity demand through conservation, optimization of existing assets and investments in clean energy infrastructure. As part of this broader strategy, BC Hydro has identified as much as 500 megawatts of potential battery storage capacity throughout British Columbia to improve system flexibility and support growing communities.

Vancouver Island’s growing population, housing development and increasing electrification are driving higher electricity demand across the region. By locating the battery facility on land already owned by BC Hydro adjacent to the Vancouver Island Terminal Substation, the project can be efficiently integrated into the existing system while minimizing development impacts.

BC Hydro will own and operate the grid-scale battery system while leveraging private-sector expertise through a competitive process for design, construction and potentially long-term maintenance. Following the July 30 request for supplier qualifications, qualified companies will be invited to participate in a request for proposals expected later this year.

BC Hydro has not yet released renderings, job creation figures, or procurement details for the Duncan site — StudioX News will follow up once the RFSQ opens July 30 and bring readers site visuals, local hiring numbers, and an interview with the Powering Growth team as they become available.
