Community groups, schools and non-profit organizations on the Sunshine Coast have more time to apply for waste-reduction funding after the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) extended the 2026 application deadline to November 20.
The regional district says four applicants have received the full amounts they requested through this year’s Waste Reduction Initiatives Program (WRIP). Because just under half of the available funding has been allocated, the SCRD is keeping the application period open.
Four projects receive funding
The announced recipients and allocations are:
- xwesam-Roberts Creek Community Association: $750 for repairs to its community food pantry, intended to help prevent food waste.
- Rotary Club of the Sunshine Coast: $962.85 to improve sorting of food waste and recyclables at community events.
- Cedar Grove Elementary: $255 for a student-led waste audit and expanded Green Team activities.
- Chatelech Community School: $1,470 for waste-diversion signage, education activities and infrastructure improvements.
The four allocations total $3,437.85. The SCRD says participating projects must include a plan to measure and report how much waste is diverted from landfill.
Who can apply
Launched in 2015, WRIP supports waste-reduction and recycling priorities in the SCRD’s Solid Waste Management Plan. The program provides $7,500 annually for eligible projects led by community groups and associations, non-profit societies, registered charities and school groups within School Districts 46 and 93.
Applications are open until Friday, November 20. Program guidelines and application information are available through the regional district and its public engagement site.
