Detective Charlie Hudson is making a comeback. Citytv announced Tuesday that actor John Reardon will return to Hudson & Rex for its ninth season, reclaiming the lead role he originally played in the popular police procedural series.
The Halifax-born actor starred in the show from its debut until Season 7. In Season 8, however, he was replaced by English actor Luke Roberts.
Last year, Reardon revealed in a social media post that his departure was not his decision. He explained that he was diagnosed with tonsil cancer during Season 7 and underwent treatment. Although doctors later cleared him to return to work, he said “the team chose to go in a different direction.”
His absence sparked a strong reaction from fans around the world. Supporters flooded the show’s social media pages with messages and even purchased full-page newspaper advertisements calling for Reardon to be brought back.
Reflecting on the support he received, Reardon said, “The series has earned a passionate audience around the world, and I’m grateful for the continued support.”
“I’m looking forward to beginning production on the new season with the cast, crew, creative team, production, and network partners — and to sharing more adventures with Rex and the fans.”
The show’s production company, Shaftesbury, also welcomed his return.
“We know that fans missed him and so did we. We look forward to getting back to work and bringing fans an exciting new season,” said chairman and CEO Christina Jennings.
Production on the new season is expected to begin in June in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
According to the season’s official description, Charlie Hudson will return after a dramatic storyline that saw him leave for South America in search of his missing brother, Jack.
“When viewers last saw Charlie Hudson, he was heading to South America in search of his missing brother, Jack,” reads a logline.
“Next season will see Charlie shocking everyone with his return to St. John’s with one final task to accomplish before putting the Belize nightmare behind him.” While Reardon resumes the role of Charlie Hudson, Citytv confirmed that Luke Roberts will remain part of the cast as Det. Mark Hudson.
