TORONTO — History was made on Friday as Canada hosted its first-ever men’s FIFA World Cup match on home soil, transforming Toronto into the centre of the football world for a landmark occasion.

The unforgettable day featured packed streets, pre-match celebrations, a historic goal, Canada’s first FIFA World Cup point earned at home, and even a few unexpected moments along the way. It also attracted an impressive lineup of Canadian stars from the worlds of entertainment, sports, and music.

Canadian Icons in the Stands

While two of Canada’s most recognizable public figures — Justin Bieber and Justin Trudeau — were spotted in Los Angeles attending the United States’ victory over Paraguay, plenty of homegrown celebrities chose to witness history in Toronto.

Among those in attendance were beloved Canadian actors Mike Myers and Ryan Reynolds, both taking in the action at Toronto Stadium.

The appearance of Myers, famous for his iconic roles in Austin Powers and Wayne’s World, even caught the attention of Canada head coach Jesse Marsch after the match.

“Mike Myers was here? Oh, sweet,” Marsch exclaimed when informed of the actor’s presence.

Joining them was fellow Canadian actor Will Arnett, another familiar face spotted among the crowd.

Sporting Legends Show Their Support

Canada’s sporting community was also well represented.

Connor McDavid, captain of the Edmonton Oilers and widely regarded as one of hockey’s biggest stars, was seen enjoying the occasion and passionately cheering on the national team throughout the match.

Olympic champions Christine Sinclair and Andre De Grasse were also in attendance. The pair had recently appeared together at the Toronto Tempo’s inaugural home game and were eager to witness another significant moment in Canadian sports history.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment for the last four years,” De Grasse told media before kickoff.

NBA player Dillon Brooks and retired Toronto FC legend Dwayne De Rosario were among the other notable Canadian athletes supporting the team from the stands.

Meanwhile, German football legend and World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger was present in Toronto as part of the media contingent covering the tournament.

A Star-Studded Opening Ceremony

The entertainment continued before kickoff with a showcase of Canadian and international musical talent.

Performers included Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez, Elyanna, and Michael Bublé, while Canadian music icon Alanis Morissette delivered the national anthem.

Beyond those who took the stage, several musicians were spotted in attendance, including Rob Baker, lead guitarist of legendary Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip.

The band recently participated in the Perfect Pitch project, a collaborative album featuring Canadian musicians released in celebration of the World Cup.

Toronto singer Shawn Desman was also at the match, where one fan humorously questioned why he had not been included on the album.

Eyes Turn to Vancouver

With Toronto’s opening match drawing an impressive roster of celebrities and sports stars, attention now shifts west.

Canada’s final two group-stage matches will be played at BC Place in Vancouver, beginning with a clash against Qatar on June 18.

If Toronto’s historic opener was any indication, Vancouver may have a difficult task matching the star power that turned out to witness one of the most significant moments in Canadian soccer history.
