ABC has officially ordered a new spinoff of the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy — but this time, the story is heading far away from Seattle and into the rugged landscapes of West Texas.
The currently untitled series is expected to debut during the 2026–2027 television season. Rather than producing a pilot episode first, ABC has given the project a straight-to-series order, meaning the network is moving directly into a full season.
According to the official description, the show will follow “an edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center — the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”
The Texas setting has already triggered plenty of discussion among fans online. Many viewers are trying to figure out how the new series could connect to the existing Grey’s Anatomy universe, especially since several former characters from the original show ended up in places like Boston, Switzerland, and Paris. For some fans, Texas feels like an unexpected new chapter for the franchise.
One user on X reacted by asking, “Who is even in Texas?”
Others are embracing the fresh setting and the change from Seattle’s familiar atmosphere. One fan wrote, “Shonda bringing the drama to the desert with rural hospital chaos is actually genius. Last chance medical center before miles of nothing? The hallway walks are about to hit different with tumbleweeds and cowboy boots.”
Even with the new location, the creative team behind the series remains closely tied to the original show. Shonda Rhimes will return as co-creator and executive producer alongside Meg Marinis. Longtime Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo is also joining the project as an executive producer, together with veteran producer Betsy Beers.
At the moment, ABC has not revealed how directly the new show will connect to Grey’s Anatomy or whether familiar characters — including Pompeo’s Meredith Grey — could appear on screen.
Marinis shared her excitement about expanding the franchise, saying she is “incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy’ universe.”
“This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas,” she said in a release.
Produced by Shondaland and 20th Television, the upcoming drama will become the fourth spinoff in the Grey’s Anatomy franchise. The original series recently completed its 22nd season and remains the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history. Previous spinoffs include Private Practice, Station 19, and Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team.
