Actor Shia LaBeouf has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to assault charges stemming from an altercation outside a bar in New Orleans during Mardi Gras celebrations.

The actor entered guilty pleas to three counts of simple battery and was sentenced by an Orleans Parish judge on Wednesday. As part of the ruling, LaBeouf will undergo alcohol treatment, serve two years of probation and receive a six-month suspended jail sentence.

Incident Took Place During Mardi Gras Celebrations

The case relates to an incident that occurred on February 17 near New Orleans’ French Quarter. According to police reports, video footage showed LaBeouf, who was shirtless at the time, pushing one person to the ground and striking another individual in the face during a confrontation outside a bar.

Authorities alleged that the actor also used homophobic slurs during the incident and while being taken into custody.

Following his arrest, LaBeouf was released on bail.

Court-Imposed Conditions

In addition to probation and alcohol treatment, the court ordered LaBeouf to avoid contact with the victims involved in the case and stay away from the bar where the altercation occurred.

His attorney, Sarah Chervinsky, said the actor wanted to accept responsibility for his actions. She described the incident as a minor altercation that took place during Mardi Gras festivities and maintained there was no evidence that the confrontation was motivated by bias or prejudice.

Meanwhile, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams stated that prosecutors consulted with the victims before offering the plea agreement.

Victim Welcomes Treatment Requirement

One of the individuals involved in the incident, local entertainer Jeffrey Damnit, identified by police as Jeffrey Klein, previously alleged that LaBeouf had harassed him earlier in the evening, using homophobic language and making threats.

Damnit’s attorney, Michael Kennedy, said he hopes the actor’s participation in substance abuse treatment will lead to positive changes in his behaviour.

The attorney added that all individuals should feel safe and be treated equally, regardless of fame or public profile.

A History of Legal Troubles

The latest case adds to a series of legal issues that have followed LaBeouf throughout his career.

After being charged in February, a judge ordered him to return to drug and alcohol rehabilitation. However, shortly afterward, the actor said in an interview that he did not believe alcohol was the primary cause of his behaviour, suggesting that anger and ego played a larger role.

LaBeouf has faced several previous arrests and legal disputes, including a 2017 arrest in New York, another arrest in Georgia later that year related to public intoxication and disorderly conduct, and misdemeanor battery and petty theft charges in Los Angeles in 2020.

Past Allegations and Career

In 2020, singer and actress FKA twigs, whose legal name is Tahliah Barnett, filed a lawsuit alleging physical and emotional abuse during their relationship. The legal dispute was later settled in July.

LaBeouf first rose to fame as a child actor on the Disney Channel series Even Stevens before going on to star in major Hollywood films such as Transformers and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The actor’s latest sentencing marks another chapter in a long history of legal and personal controversies that have often overshadowed his on-screen success.
