The tournament in 30 seconds. The FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting event on earth, held every four years. The 2026 edition is the largest ever — 48 national teams, 104 matches, and for the first time three host countries: Canada, the United States and Mexico. Canadian matches are played at BC Place in Vancouver and BMO Field in Toronto.
How it works. Teams start in 12 groups of 4. Each team plays 3 group matches (win = 3 points, draw = 1). The top two in every group, plus the eight best third-place teams, advance to the Round of 32. From there it is knockout football — lose once and you are out — through the Round of 16, Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals to the Final on July 19.

June 11, 4:30 PM PT — Mexico opens with a win, and history. The co-hosts beat South Africa 2–0 at a packed Estadio Azteca. Raúl Jiménez, whose career nearly ended with a head injury in 2020, scored his first-ever World Cup goal — and the match produced three red cards, a first for a tournament opener. Canada takes the stage Friday at noon PT.

June 11, 2:00 PM PT — Canada’s turn comes Friday. Canada opens its home World Cup Friday against Bosnia and Herzegovina (noon PT). In Vancouver, the FIFA Fan Festival at Hastings Park is free and open. StudioX News will be reporting from downtown Vancouver viewing events.
