Jagrup Brar Summer Picnic Blends Food, Painting, and Community
SURREY, B.C. — The Jagrup Brar summer picnic drew a large community turnout at Francis Park on Saturday, as the Fleetwood MLA and B.C. Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals brought together residents, supporters, and local leaders for an afternoon aimed at strengthening ties across the constituency.
The event pulled a broad cross-section of political and community figures. Among those in attendance were Liberal Members of Parliament Sukh Dhaliwal and Gurbux Saini, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, mayoral candidate Mike Starchuk, Linda Annis, Garry Begg, Sheena Varmani, and MLA Amna Shah, among others.
Several speakers addressed the crowd over the course of the afternoon, using their remarks to underline the value of community cooperation and local participation. The gathering carried a relaxed, neighbourly tone, with attendees moving between conversations as they caught up with familiar faces and met new ones.
A Family Afternoon of Food, Painting, and Connection
Guests were served pizza, samosas, and refreshments, and the park stayed lively through the afternoon. The summer picnic was built around families as much as politics. Organizers set up a children’s painting competition that drew enthusiastic participation from young attendees, who filled canvases with colourful work that added a creative touch to the day.
A bouncy castle and other activities kept children occupied throughout, while parents gathered under the tents to eat and talk. The mix of activity gave the event the feel of a neighbourhood gathering rather than a formal political function, which is part of what has made these constituency events a regular fixture in the Fleetwood riding.
Events like this have become a common way for elected officials across Surrey to stay connected with residents outside of election cycles. For a fast-growing and diverse riding like Fleetwood, an informal summer gathering offers a setting where residents can meet their representatives directly, raise local concerns, and connect with one another across community lines.
The Fleetwood riding has grown quickly over the past decade, and its residents come from a wide mix of backgrounds. That diversity was visible across the park on Saturday, where conversations shifted easily between English, Punjabi, and other languages. For many attendees, the appeal of the Jagrup Brar summer picnic was less about politics and more about the chance to spend a warm afternoon outdoors with neighbours. Volunteers helped keep the food moving and the activities running, and organizers said the strong turnout reflected the community’s appetite for in-person gatherings after a busy summer of local events across Surrey.
Community leaders present included Harchand Singh Bhangu, Ajmer Singh Bhagpur, Jaswant Singh Brar, senior society president Avtar Singh Dhillon, PICS CEO Satbir Singh Cheema, Gurdeep Singh Khurana, Vikas Khurana, Jai Virdi, Surinder Singh Sandhu, Harmel Singh Sunner, Manjit Singh Sohi, Paramjit Khosla, and Rajinder Singh Pandher, among others.
The turnout reflected the density of community networks across Surrey, where cultural, political, and social organizations often overlap. Gatherings such as the Jagrup Brar summer picnic tend to draw not just constituents but leaders from across the region’s civic life, making them useful barometers of local engagement heading into a busy fall.
The picnic closed with Minister Brar and his team honouring the winners of the children’s painting competition, followed by a word of thanks to all who attended.
Brar represents Fleetwood in the B.C. Legislature and serves in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals.
