Stephen Tweedale (NDP) Tweedale is a longtime community organizer and president of the local NDP riding association. He has lived in North Vancouver for more than 25 years.

Shelley Luce (Green) Luce is an environmental scientist and former Sierra Club BC campaigner. She has also served on the City of North Vancouver’s Advisory Planning Commission.

Why This By-election Matters

North Vancouver—Capilano has been held by the Liberals since 2015. The seat is considered relatively safe for the party, but the result will still be watched closely in Ottawa.

Two other federal by-elections are also taking place on August 31:

  • Beaches—East York (Ontario)
  • Chicoutimi—Le Fjord (Quebec)

Together, these three races could affect the Liberals’ current narrow majority in the House of Commons. A majority requires 172 seats. If the Liberals hold their two seats in North Vancouver and Beaches—East York, they are expected to maintain majority status even if they do not win the Quebec riding.

How to Vote

Eligible voters can cast their ballot on:

  • Election Day: August 31 (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • Advance polls: August 21–24 (9 a.m. to 9 p.m.)
  • At their local Elections Canada office until August 25 at 6 p.m.
  • By mail (deadlines apply)

Voters must be Canadian citizens, at least 18 years old on election day, and live in the riding.

Looking Ahead

All-candidates meetings are scheduled on the North Shore in the coming days, including events organized by the North Vancouver Chamber and local community groups. Candidates are expected to focus on housing, affordability, infrastructure, and the impact of federal policies on the North Shore.
