Prime Minister Mark Carney met French President Emmanuel Macron in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon on September 20, 2026, during the first official visit to the French archipelago by a sitting Canadian prime minister.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the leaders discussed closer cooperation on defence, aerospace, energy security, artificial intelligence, wildfire management, trade diversification and cross-border security. They also reaffirmed the sovereignty of Canada and of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French overseas collectivity located about 25 kilometres off Newfoundland.
Canada-France cooperation
The two leaders directed their space agencies, defence ministries and industries to develop and share common space infrastructure, including launch systems and ground reception and control infrastructure. They also welcomed a new strategic partnership launched by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and CCI France to deepen business ties and diversify trade.
The readout said the leaders tasked the Regional Joint Cooperation Commission with expanding work in four areas: economic integration and trade diversification, energy transition and decarbonization, climate resilience and early-warning systems, and cross-border security.
Historical and regional significance
Carney and Macron also took part in a ceremony marking Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon’s rallying to Free France in 1941. The Prime Minister’s Office said the leaders highlighted the archipelago’s historical, cultural and economic connections with Atlantic Canada.
