Metro Vancouver’s outgoing board has postponed a vote on the region’s 2027 budget and five-year financial plan, setting up the incoming regional board to take up a major financial decision after this year’s municipal elections.

The decision follows calls from newly elected municipal leaders to leave the budget decision to the representatives who will be responsible for implementing it. Reports on Friday said the board deferred the vote during its final meeting.

Why the vote was delayed

Several municipalities elected new mayors in the October 2026 elections. Supporters of postponement argued that an incoming board should have a direct role in approving the regional financial plan that will shape services and costs in the years ahead.

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum had called for the meeting to be cancelled, arguing that voters had replaced mayors in 13 of the region’s 21 municipalities. Other regional leaders also supported giving the incoming board the decision.

Why the 2027 budget matters to residents

Metro Vancouver’s budget funds regional responsibilities that affect daily life, including drinking water, wastewater treatment, solid waste services, regional parks and transportation-related functions. The financial plan can influence the levies and costs municipalities must account for in their own budgets.

Metro Vancouver’s published budget process says the 2027 budget and 2027–2031 financial plan were developed through public engagement, with final adoption expected in October. The postponement means residents and municipalities will need to watch for the incoming board’s next steps.

What happens next

The incoming board will need to consider the proposed budget and financial plan and determine whether changes are required before approval. The exact date for a new vote should be confirmed through Metro Vancouver’s official meeting notices.
