Jennifer Whiteside has been named interim leader of the B.C. New Democratic Party after the party’s defeat in the October 24 provincial election, giving the former cabinet minister the task of guiding the NDP as it moves into opposition.

The incoming NDP caucus unanimously supported Whiteside at a meeting in Victoria on Thursday, October 29, according to reporting by The Canadian Press. Whiteside said she was “pleased and humbled” to receive the support of her colleagues.

Whiteside represents New Westminster-Coquitlam and has served in the B.C. legislature since 2020. She served as minister of education, minister of mental health and addictions, and most recently minister of labour in David Eby’s government.

Farnworth and Sharma receive key caucus roles

The caucus also selected Mike Farnworth as opposition house leader and Niki Sharma as caucus chair, according to The Canadian Press and CityNews Vancouver.

Farnworth, the veteran MLA for Port Coquitlam, previously held senior cabinet and government house-leadership roles. Sharma served as attorney general and deputy premier before the election.

A new role for the NDP after nine years in government

The appointment follows the NDP’s loss to the B.C. Conservatives on October 24. David Eby announced on election night that he would step down as party leader after the defeat.

The change puts the NDP on the opposition benches after nine years in government. The party now faces the task of rebuilding its organization, holding the incoming government to account and deciding who will lead it permanently.

Permanent leadership decision still ahead

Whiteside’s appointment is interim, not a permanent leadership election. The Canadian Press reported that the party is not expected to choose a permanent leader until 2027. No permanent leadership timetable was included in the reports reviewed for this article.

For B.C. voters, the immediate significance is the change in the legislature’s political balance: the Conservatives are preparing to govern, while the NDP begins its first period as the province’s official opposition since 2017.
