HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series will need to find a new actor for Ginny Weasley after child star Gracie Cochrane decided to leave the role.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO ‘Harry Potter’ series after Season 1,” Cochrane and her family said in a joint statement. “Her time as part of the ‘Harry Potter’ world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”
An HBO spokesperson also addressed the departure, saying: “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show. We wish Gracie and her family the best.”
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Ginny Weasley only appears briefly. She is first seen at King’s Cross Station alongside her mother, saying goodbye to her older brothers as they head off to Hogwarts, before later welcoming them home.
The character becomes far more important in Season 2, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J. K. Rowling. In that story, Ginny — the younger sister of Harry’s close friend Ron Weasley — is manipulated into opening the hidden Chamber of Secrets beneath Hogwarts, unleashing a deadly giant serpent inside the school.
Production on the first season has already wrapped, with the show expected to premiere this Christmas. Meanwhile, work on Season 2 is currently underway in pre-production at Leavesden Studios near London.
