175,000-square-foot facility will include 50-metre pool, two gymnasiums, fitness centre, childcare spaces and a new 40,000-square-foot library
SURREY, B.C. — Construction is now underway on the new Newton Community Centre, a $310.6-million project that the City of Surrey describes as one of the largest capital investments in the city’s history.
The City said crews are currently removing decommissioned infrastructure, carrying out site grading and conducting additional geotechnical testing as work advances at the future community centre site.
The project is located on the east side of King George Boulevard, next to the Newton Seniors Centre. The City expects the facility to open in spring 2030.
“This project is a gamechanger for Newton,” Mayor Brenda Locke said in the City’s September 15 release.
Locke said the new facility is intended to bring recreation, culture and library services together in one location, creating a community hub for residents of Newton.
What will be inside the new Newton Community Centre?
The planned facility will cover approximately 175,000 square feet and will bring together a range of recreation, wellness, cultural and library services.
The centre is planned to include:
- A 50-metre lap pool
- A leisure pool
- Hot tub
- Sauna
- Two gymnasiums
- Fitness centre
- Multi-purpose rooms
- Arts spaces
- Child-care areas
- A new 40,000-square-foot library
The new library will be more than twice the size of the existing Newton branch and is planned to include spaces and resources for learning, youth, families and community use.
New road to improve access
The start of construction follows completion of the new Newton Community Centre access road, which is intended to provide a more direct connection from King George Boulevard to the future facility.
The road includes pedestrian and cycling connections and is scheduled to open in the coming weeks, according to the City.
Earlier this year, Surrey Council considered a $5.3-million contract for road and utility work surrounding the future centre, including the 70 Avenue extension and improvements to 136B Street.
The road improvements are also intended to support future transit connectivity in the Newton area.
A major investment in Newton
The Newton Community Centre has a total project budget of $310.6 million.
The City has previously described it as the largest capital project investment in Surrey’s history.
The project is part of Surrey’s broader investment in recreation and community infrastructure as the city continues to grow.
The City’s 2026–2030 financial plan identifies the Newton Community Centre among its major capital projects, alongside projects including the City Centre Arena, Fleetwood Firehall No. 6 relocation, Unwin Community Park and the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre expansion.
Building a new community hub for Newton
Newton is one of Surrey’s major town centres, and the community centre project is intended to bring multiple public services together at one location.
The City says the facility is designed to support recreation, culture, wellness, childcare and library services while providing spaces for residents of different ages and interests.
With early construction activity now underway, the project is moving from planning and site preparation toward the construction of the permanent facility.
The City currently lists spring 2030 as the expected completion date.
For Newton residents, the project will eventually bring expanded recreation, aquatic, cultural, childcare and library services to the community in a single facility.
