SURREY, B.C. — Surrey South will have a five-way contest in the 2026 B.C. provincial election, with candidates representing the Conservative Party, BC NDP, BC Green Party, CentreBC and an unaffiliated campaign.
Surrey South has five candidates in B.C. election 2026 as voters prepare to choose next MLA
Elections BC’s final candidate list confirms Denis R Hurtubise, Megan Knight, Bill McConnell, Elenore Sturko and Parik Tahlan as the five candidates on the ballot in Surrey South. Nominations closed at 1 p.m. on October 3. Elections BC
The riding is one of several Surrey constituencies drawing significant attention ahead of the October 24 provincial election.
The five candidates
Denis R Hurtubise — Unaffiliated
Denis R Hurtubise is running without a political-party affiliation.
Elections BC lists Hurtubise as an unaffiliated candidate in Surrey South. Elections BC
Megan Knight — Conservative Party
Megan Knight is the Conservative Party candidate.
Knight is the mayor of White Rock and has a long history of municipal and community involvement. She previously served on White Rock City Council before becoming mayor in 2022.
The Conservative campaign says Knight has focused on community safety, local businesses and regional issues during her municipal career. She has also served on the Metro Vancouver Board and TransLink Mayors’ Council. Conservative Party of British Columbia
Knight is seeking to move from municipal government to the B.C. Legislature as the Conservative candidate for Surrey South.
Bill McConnell — BC Green Party
Bill McConnell is representing the BC Green Party.
Elections BC lists McConnell as the Green candidate for Surrey South. Available election records show no previous provincial electoral run on record for McConnell. BC Ballot
His candidacy gives Surrey South a Green option in a riding where the campaign is otherwise divided among several political parties and an unaffiliated candidate.
Elenore Sturko — CentreBC
Elenore Sturko is running for CentreBC and is the party’s leader.
CentreBC describes itself as advocating a balanced approach to government, with a focus on affordability, safety, opportunity and strong public services alongside a strong private sector. The party lists Sturko as both its leader and candidate for Surrey South. CentreBC
Sturko previously represented Surrey South as a Conservative MLA before leaving the party and later becoming leader of CentreBC.
Her candidacy adds another significant political option to a riding that has undergone considerable political change since the last provincial election.
Parik Tahlan — BC NDP
Parik Tahlan is the BC NDP candidate in Surrey South.
Tahlan is a security professional and holds a master’s degree in law specializing in corporate and commercial law, as well as an MBA in marketing, according to his campaign. His campaign also highlights his work in security and his advocacy around healthcare. BC NDP
Tahlan is seeking his first term in the B.C. Legislature.
A riding that has changed politically
Surrey South enters the 2026 election after a major political shift since the 2024 provincial election.
In 2024, Brent Chapman won Surrey South for the Conservative Party with 13,056 votes, or 58.8 per cent, defeating BC NDP candidate Haroon Ghaffar. The margin was 3,920 votes. BC Ballot
Chapman subsequently left the Conservatives and became associated with OneBC. Although OneBC had previously announced him as a candidate for Surrey South, his name does not appear on Elections BC’s final 2026 candidate list. CityNews Vancouver
That leaves Surrey South without the incumbent on the 2026 ballot and creates a significantly different contest from the one voters saw two years earlier.
Five-way race takes shape
The final lineup means Surrey South voters will choose between five candidates:
| Candidate | Affiliation |
|---|---|
| Denis R Hurtubise | Unaffiliated |
| Megan Knight | Conservative Party |
| Bill McConnell | BC Green Party |
| Elenore Sturko | CentreBC |
| Parik Tahlan | BC NDP |
The official Elections BC list confirms all five candidates. Elections BC
With the incumbent absent from the ballot and several established political figures competing for the seat, Surrey South is expected to be closely watched as voters decide who will represent the riding in Victoria.
Final voting day is Saturday, October 24, 2026. Advance voting is scheduled for October 16–21. BC Ballot
