What the embassy said

In a statement on its website, the U.S. Embassy described the threat as credible. It advised everyone to avoid the area around the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve and to stay away from crowds.

Canada’s advice to travellers

GAC cited the conflict with Ukraine and the risk of terrorism in warning Canadians against all travel to Russia. Its guidance for people already in the country is direct.

  • Canadians in Russia should consider leaving by commercial means.
  • Those who stay should maintain a low profile.
  • Canadians who hold Russian citizenship may be subject to call-up for mandatory military service.

The last point may matter to dual citizens and to families in Canada with ties to Russia.

Military activity and terrorism risk inside Russia

GAC said the armed conflict with Ukraine has brought military activity inside Russia’s borders. Attacks are most common near the Russian-Ukrainian border, notably in the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod oblasts. They also occur in the Black Sea region, including Rostov Oblast and Krasnodar Krai.

The department also said terrorist activity has targeted a range of public places. These include government buildings, schools, cultural venues, places of worship, airports and tourist attractions.

Separate development in southern Ukraine

Global News also reported that evacuees from Russia-occupied Oleshky crossed into Ukrainian-held territory on Saturday. The crossing was part of a major rescue operation under a ceasefire in the southern Kherson region. The operation began early Tuesday.

The Moscow alert and the GAC advisory are the latest official warnings about the security situation in Russia. Canadians with plans to travel there, or with relatives in the country, can check GAC’s current travel advice.
