The organization that supports dozens of food banks across Saskatchewan has lost its charitable status, and its executive director says the fault lies with its accounting firm. The details come from Global News Canada, which spoke with the director and received a statement from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

CRA revoked registration over missing return
According to the CRA’s statement to Global News, the agency revoked the registration of Food Banks of Saskatchewan on Sept. 12, 2026. The reason was a failure to file its annual return.
Executive director Michael Kincade says the paperwork was completed and signed, but the accounting firm never submitted it. “We were told it was done,” he told Global News.
Kincade says the organization received a notification from the CRA in February saying the return had not been received. He says the firm assured him it would be handled. The revocation notice came in September.
What the revocation means
The CRA says all registered charities must file annual return information, attachments and financial statements under the Income Tax Act. The deadline is no later than six months after the end of their fiscal year.
Organizations with revoked status can keep operating, the agency says. However, they can no longer issue donation receipts or accept gifts from registered charities.
The CRA says it cannot discuss specific cases because of the confidentiality provisions of the Act. It says any organization that has lost its charitable status can apply to regain it.
Seeking reinstatement during a busy season
Kincade says the organization is seeking to have its status reinstated and that all required documents have now been filed. He says it is “business as usual.” The group continues to accept donations and to work with its 36 member food banks.
There is no timeline for when the status might be restored. Kincade says he is worried about the impact as the organization prepares for the busiest time of year.
He says the group is trying to be upfront with donors about the situation. “It’s stressful, but we’ll keep doing what we do,” he said.
The member food banks hold their own charitable status, Kincade says, so they are not affected by the revocation.
Accounting firm accepts responsibility
Kincade says the accounting firm has accepted responsibility for the error and will cover any penalties. He declined to name the firm or share documents. He says it is a national organization and is still helping to fix the problem.
He added that Food Banks of Saskatchewan has no plans to change accountants.
