What happened in Ahuntsic

Montreal police say the collision happened shortly before noon on Friday. It took place at the intersection of Henri-Bourassa Boulevard and Jeanne-Mance Street, in Montreal’s Ahuntsic neighbourhood.

The driver left the scene before emergency crews arrived. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police pursuit before the crash

Quebec’s police watchdog says the vehicle was reportedly being chased by an unmarked provincial police patrol car just before the deadly hit-and-run.

The agency says early reports suggest officers saw the vehicle commit a “possible violation” of road safety laws and tried to stop the driver. The driver allegedly fled and then struck the cyclist.

Independent investigation

The province’s police investigations bureau, which looks into incidents involving officers, has launched an investigation into the crash.

The information so far comes from Montreal police and the watchdog agency, and the agency’s account is based on early reports.
