Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada and the United States will spend the coming weeks working toward a trade deal that benefits both countries, following a conversation with President Donald Trump. The information comes from Global News Canada.

Carney confirmed the call in a social media post on Sunday. Global News reports that the comments are the latest sign a deal could still happen, but also appear to indicate an agreement will not be reached before the U.S. midterm elections on Tuesday.
What Carney said
Carney wrote that the call builds on recent “constructive discussions” about the outlines of a deal. He said such an agreement would create jobs for workers, improve affordability for families, and fully respect Canada’s languages, culture and sovereignty.
He added that the two countries’ teams will now work in the coming weeks to deliver that outcome.
Global News notes that Trump had not commented on Carney’s remarks as of Sunday.
A shift from last week
The post follows comments Carney made to reporters on Wednesday, when he said the federal government was “not at that position right now” on reaching a deal. Reporters asked him why he was willing to consider a deal before the midterms, and whether Canada was being set up to be the “fall guys” by the U.S. administration if it loses. Carney responded that Canada is after the right deal.
Global News also reported last Monday that the once-stalled talks were “moving quickly” at the political level, citing multiple sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations.
How talks broke down in August
Canada walked away from negotiations in August. Carney said at the time that the U.S. had made a last-minute push for language that would limit Canada’s ability to strike trade deals with other countries, weaken French language requirements and hurt the country’s struggling auto industry.
The breakdown led to Trump’s previously threatened 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods taking effect. Canada responded with dollar-for-dollar retaliatory duties.
Trump spoke about Canada on Thursday at a campaign rally in South Carolina for the Republican Senate candidate. He suggested Canada had been “treating us extremely nicely recently” and said his tariffs had the effect of improving relations, according to Global News.
Budget due Thursday
The talk of a possible deal comes just days before the federal government is set to announce its latest budget on Thursday.
Source reporting indicates the two sides are now in a weeks-long working phase, with Canadian officials pointing to jobs, affordability and sovereignty as the benchmarks for any agreement.
