Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced six federal by-elections for Dec. 7, just before the holidays, according to Global News Canada. The votes will fill vacancies created in recent months by the departures of MPs from several parties.

Two of the ridings are in Ontario, three are in Quebec and one is in the Prairies.

Ontario: Brantford-Brant South and Scarborough North

Brantford-Brant South became vacant when Conservative MP Larry Brock returned to the Crown prosecutor’s office. The Liberals have nominated certified financial planner Joy O’Donnell. The Conservatives have chosen Brantford’s former mayor, Kevin Davis.

Davis’s nomination drew some criticism, Global News reports, because Brock had endorsed local pastor Dave Carroll as his successor. Carroll now plans to run as an independent.

In Scarborough North, Liberal MP Shaun Chen stepped down, citing health concerns after a car crash in October 2025. The source does not list candidates for that riding.

Quebec: three seats open

In Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, long-time NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice resigned to run for Québec solidaire in the 2026 provincial election. He won that race.

Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton, a Bloc Québécois riding, was previously held by Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay. He also stepped down to run provincially, for the Parti Québécois, and won in the 2026 election.

The third Quebec contest is in Laurier-Sainte-Marie. The riding was held by Liberal MP and former environment minister Steven Guilbeault, who resigned in August. The Liberals have nominated former Desjardins CEO Guy Cormier, a relatively high-profile candidate, and confirmed the nomination in a news release Sunday.

The Bloc Québécois has nominated human rights activist Zumretay Arkin. The NDP has nominated Nima Machouf.

Prairies: Yorkton-Melville

Yorkton-Melville was held by Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall from the 2015 federal election. She announced this summer that she did not plan to run in the next federal election, and she resigned Aug. 31.

The Liberals have named Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle as their nominee. Nelson Pohl is representing the Conservatives. The NDP has not yet named a nominee.
