Hedley is set to receive a new year-round transit shelter after the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen secured $90,000 in provincial funding for the project.
The shelter will serve passengers using BC Transit’s Route 50 between Princeton and Penticton. The RDOS says it will be installed at the corner of Scott Avenue and Irene Street West, with related site improvements.
In an information release published November 3, the regional district said construction was scheduled to begin during the week of November 3, with completion expected by December 2026. The timeline is subject to weather and construction schedules; the release does not confirm that work has already begun.
Provincial funding secured for community project
The project is funded through the Province of British Columbia’s Transit Minor Betterments Program. The RDOS said it had pursued funding for a Hedley shelter since 2019 in response to an identified community need. The application was approved based on safety, ridership and accessibility goals.
The regional district says the shelter is intended to provide transit users with a dedicated, covered waiting area throughout the year. Route 50 connects communities between Princeton and Penticton, with Hedley among the stops shown in BC Transit’s regional rider information.
