Residents connected to the Okanagan Falls water system are being advised to take precautions while the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) carries out its fall water-system flushing program from November 4 to 6.
The October 28 information notice says flushing began in the Lower Zone and is scheduled to progress to the Upper Zone by the end of the week. The RDOS notice advises residents to use a safe alternate water source when preparing formula for infants and young children because of the potential for elevated manganese levels.
What residents should know
Water may appear discoloured or contain sediment during the flushing work. If water looks dirty, the RDOS advises running an outside hose bib or cold-water tap until it runs clear. Residents are also advised to limit hot-water use during flushing, check water quality before doing laundry and consider isolating in-home treatment systems until turbidity returns to normal levels.
The regional district also recommends flushing private water service lines and indoor plumbing by running all cold-water taps at the same time to help clear sediment that may have accumulated in the pipes.
Hotels, motels, restaurants, wineries, stores and operators of public facilities are responsible for notifying their customers about the information notice.
Where to get information
Residents can contact RDOS Public Works at 250-490-4135 or 1-877-610-3737. For after-hours water emergencies, the RDOS lists 250-490-4141. The regional district’s water-system page also provides zone maps and address information.
