CRITICAL PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT — IMAGE-INCOMPLETE: A verified story-specific image was not available at publication time. This text-only alert is being published because authorities are urging people to stay away from the Snooka trails while a search continues.

The remains of one person have been found and a second person remains missing after a suspected bear incident near Bella Coola, while conservation officers search for any bear that may have been involved.

BELLA COOLA, B.C. — November 3, 2026

The Canadian Press reported Tuesday, citing the B.C. Conservation Officer Service, that the remains were found Monday in the area of the Snooka west trail. The search for the second person is continuing.

Family members had reported two people missing on Sunday, according to the Conservation Officer Service information reported by CP. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the identities of the people involved.

Public urged to avoid Snooka trails

Insp. Jeff Tyre of the Conservation Officer Service said evidence at the scene where the remains were found suggested a bear may have been involved. The service is working to locate and trap any bears that may be connected to the incident.

People are being urged to stay away from the Snooka trails because of the potential danger and to give officers room to conduct their work. Anyone in the area should follow instructions from local authorities and should not enter the trail system to search for the missing person or any wildlife.

The service said any bear captured will be assessed to determine the appropriate next steps. It has stated that an animal determined to be responsible for the attack would be dispatched under provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines.

A separate incident from the 2025 school-group attack

The latest incident is separate from the November 2025 grizzly attack on a group of elementary school students and teachers near Bella Coola. That earlier attack injured several people and led to an extensive search for the bear believed to be responsible.
