Alberta’s justice minister has rejected a request from the province’s elections agency to consider delaying the next provincial election, according to Global News Canada.

In a letter to Elections Alberta, Justice Minister Mickey Amery said the government has “no intention of changing” the election date. By law, the vote must take place on or before Oct. 18, 2027.

Minister cites certainty of fixed date

Amery wrote that the fixed date is set in law and gives Albertans certainty and predictability about the democratic process.

His letter responded to Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure. McClure had written to Speaker Ric McIver suggesting the election be held either under the current electoral boundaries or be postponed.

In a letter shared by the Opposition NDP, McClure said either option would give his office enough time to hold the vote with integrity and safeguards in place.

Amery said the legislature will consider the full boundaries report and settle the final boundaries before the end of the fall sitting. That, he wrote, would give Elections Alberta about 320 days, or roughly 11 full months, to prepare for and run the election.

He added that Alberta law does not guarantee the agency “lengthy advance notice” of a general election.

Boundary report at the centre of the dispute

A contentious report on new electoral boundaries is set to be released this week. It has been put before an all-party legislative committee and is scheduled to be tabled in the legislature on Monday.

The NDP has previously said the proposed changes amount to gerrymandering in two southern Alberta cities, Lethbridge and Calgary. Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi made the allegation after being briefed on the report, which had not yet been made public.

Global News described gerrymandering as a practice more often seen in the United States than in Canada. It involves designing voting districts not to reflect geography or population patterns, but to concentrate or fragment voters to benefit a political party.

Two members of the committee that wrote the report also said the suggested ridings draw a line between rural and urban voters.

Elections Alberta warns of strain

McClure cautioned that disagreements over the boundaries could cause delays. He said a typical provincial vote requires up to 18 months of preparation and that his agency has been stretched thin.

The fixed election date was changed in 2024. The Smith government moved the four-year cycle from May to October to avoid clashes with major natural disasters such as wildfires and floods, which are more common in Alberta in the spring.
