Kamloops seeks public input on next accessibility plan

The City of Kamloops is beginning an update of its 2023 Accessibility Plan and is inviting residents, community organizations and people with lived experience of disability to help identify barriers and set priorities for the next phase of municipal accessibility work.

The review will examine progress under the existing plan, identify barriers that remain and consider new or emerging priorities across City facilities, parks, streets, sidewalks, trails, programs, services, employment, transportation and municipal communications.

The 2023 plan contained 64 actions across five areas: the built environment, programs and services, employment, transportation and general organizational actions. The City says the update will establish revised goals, priorities, responsibilities and measures for the next phase.

How residents can participate

The City’s November 4 news release says online feedback will be accepted from November 13, 2026, through January 31, 2027. The project page separately lists November 14 as the date the survey will be available. Residents can also provide accessibility-related feedback through the City’s year-round feedback form.

An in-person drop-in open house is planned for Saturday, November 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sandman Centre, 300 Lorne Street. City staff and community partners will be available to discuss work completed under the current plan and hear ideas for future priorities.

The City says it will work with its Accessibility Engagement Group, Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc, community agencies and the public. Targeted engagement opportunities are also planned for people who may face barriers participating in traditional public consultation.

What the review will cover

The review will consider access to municipal buildings and public spaces; participation in programs, recreation and public engagement; recruitment and workplace accommodation; transit infrastructure and pedestrian mobility; and accessible information, websites, documents and customer service.

The City is required to maintain an accessibility plan under British Columbia’s Accessible British Columbia Act. The update is intended to assess the current plan’s results and guide practical actions for the next three-year period.
