Mario Mania Continues! Super Mario Galaxy Movie Scores $35M In Box Office, The Mummy Starts At $13.5M

Super Mario Galaxy Movie Scores $35M In Box Office

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is showing no signs of slowing down. In its third weekend, the blockbuster comfortably held on to the top spot at the box office, bringing in another $35 million. Backed by Universal Pictures and Illumination, the film has quickly turned into the year’s biggest success story.

The numbers speak for themselves. The movie has already earned a massive $355.2 million domestically, while its global total has surged to $747.5 million. With this kind of momentum, crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide now seems like a matter of when, not if. Given its soaring popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo and the studios fast-track future Mario installments to keep the momentum alive.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Holds Firm in Second Place

Despite the dominance of Mario, Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary continues to perform impressively. Now in its fifth weekend, the sci-fi adventure added $20.5 million, securing the second spot on the charts. Its domestic total has climbed to a strong $285.1 million, making it one of the most successful releases of the year so far.

However, the ongoing success of both The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary has created a challenging environment for new films trying to break through.

‘The Mummy’ Box Office Opening Collection

One of the weekend’s biggest new releases, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, had to settle for third place with an opening of $13.5 million. While the film didn’t carry a massive production budget—reportedly around $22 million—its debut still falls short of expectations, especially when compared to Evil Dead Rise, Cronin’s previous film that went on to earn nearly $150 million worldwide.

The film comes from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, with horror heavyweights James Wan and Jason Blum producing under their banners, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions. Known for delivering successful genre films, the duo has built a reputation for reviving classic monsters. Still, The Mummy appears to be landing somewhere in the middle—neither a breakout hit like The Invisible Man nor a disappointment on the level of Wolf Man.

Other Films in the Mix

Beyond the top three, the weekend saw a mix of steady performers and smaller debuts. A24’s relationship comedy The Drama continued to draw audiences, earning $4.8 million in its third weekend and pushing its total to $39.7 million. The film stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, whose on-screen pairing has generated significant buzz. The duo is also set to appear together in upcoming projects like Dune: Part Three and The Odyssey, adding to the excitement around their collaboration.

Meanwhile, Universal Pictures’ romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany rounded out the top five with $3.8 million, taking its two-week total to $14.4 million.

Among new entries, Magnolia Pictures’ Normal debuted in seventh place with $2.5 million. Directed by Ben Wheatley, the action film stars Bob Odenkirk as a small-town sheriff who stumbles upon a larger conspiracy after a bank robbery. Known for his intense storytelling style in films like Free Fire and High-Rise, Wheatley brings his signature edge to the project.

Limited Releases Make a Quiet Debut

In limited release, Focus Features’ documentary Lorne, which explores the life and career of Lorne Michaels, opened to $270,000 across 415 theaters. Meanwhile, A24’s Mother Mary earned $168,063 from just five locations.

Overall, the weekend box office paints a clear picture: established hits continue to dominate, while new releases face an uphill battle to capture audience attention. For now, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie remains firmly in control—and all eyes are on how far its winning streak can go.
