A Fierce Comeback: The Devil Wears Prada 2 Slays Opening Day With $32.5M

Devil Wears Prada 2

“Don’t be ridiculous, Andrea. Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us.” That line pretty much sums up the mood at 20th Century Studios this weekend. The Devil Wears Prada 2 has stormed the box office, pulling in a strong $32.5 million on Friday alone across 4,150 theaters in North America. The stylish sequel is now on track to earn between $75 million and $80 million by Sunday, though some projections suggest it could go even higher—possibly touching $90 million in its opening weekend.

For context, the original The Devil Wears Prada, released in June 2006, opened to $27.5 million domestically and eventually made $125 million in the U.S. (or about $204 million when adjusted for inflation).

The sequel brings back the original creative team, with director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna returning, alongside stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. This time, the story follows Andy Sachs, now a major name in fashion journalism, as she crosses paths once again with Miranda Priestly, the formidable editor-in-chief of Runway magazine.

Meanwhile, last weekend’s top film Michael has slipped to second place, earning $14.4 million on its second Friday. The Lionsgate musical biopic about the King of Pop is expected to add around $51 million by Sunday—a drop of roughly 48% from its debut. Even so, its domestic total should climb to an impressive $180 million.

If it continues to perform well, Michael could challenge Bohemian Rhapsody for the title of the highest-grossing musical biopic ever, though that film’s $910 million global haul is still a tough benchmark. Even if it doesn’t get there, it may still surpass The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to become Lionsgate’s biggest film of all time.

Elsewhere, Angel Studios’ animated take on Animal Farm opened quietly, earning about $1.1 million on Friday from 1,130 theaters, landing in sixth place. Directed by Andy Serkis, the family-friendly reimagining of George Orwell’s classic features a voice cast that includes Jim Parsons, Iman Vellani, Seth Rogen, Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, and Kieran Culkin.

The Super Mario Galaxy movie came in third with $2.7 million on Friday and is expected to reach $12 million by Sunday, pushing its domestic total to around $402 million after five weekends. In fourth place, Neon’s horror release Hokum earned $2.6 million on Friday and is eyeing a $6 million weekend. Written and directed by Damian McCarthy, the film follows a writer who visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes—only to discover the place is haunted by an ancient evil. Adam Scott leads the cast.

Rounding out the top five is Project Hail Mary, which brought in $2.2 million on Friday. By the end of the weekend, its North American total is expected to reach $318 million after adding another $8.9 million.
