PORT COQUITLAM — Mike Farnworth will seek re-election as the BC NDP candidate in Port Coquitlam in the October 24 provincial election.
Farnworth is one of the longest-serving MLAs in British Columbia. He was first elected to represent Port Coquitlam in 1991, served until 2001 and returned to the legislature in 2005. He has represented the riding since then.
Farnworth has held a number of cabinet positions during his political career, including Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Minister of Health, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and other senior portfolios.
He was appointed Minister of Transportation and Transit in November 2024 and has continued to represent Port Coquitlam in the legislature. Current B.C. government and legislative records identify him as the MLA for Port Coquitlam.
Farnworth was raised in Port Coquitlam and has lived in the community for more than 50 years. Before entering provincial politics, he served three terms on Port Coquitlam city council after first being elected in 1983.
In announcing his candidacy, Farnworth pointed to the economic relationship between British Columbia and the United States as a major issue heading into the election.
“As the trade war with Donald Trump intensifies, our province finds itself in an existential moment,” Farnworth said.
He said his priorities include protecting workers, maintaining public services and reducing B.C.’s economic dependence on the United States.
The BC NDP also highlighted Farnworth’s experience in government and his work on transportation, healthcare, public safety and other provincial files.
Farnworth has remained active on local issues in Port Coquitlam. In August, he joined provincial officials in marking the start of construction on a replacement for Hazel Trembath Elementary School, which was closed following a fire. A new 300-seat addition at École Dr. Charles Best Secondary also opened in September 2026.
His re-election bid comes as B.C. heads toward the October 24 provincial election. Elections BC has confirmed October 24, 2026, as Final Voting Day.
Farnworth will once again contest Port Coquitlam for the BC NDP after more than three decades of representing the community in the provincial legislature.
